A DUI checkpoint conducted law weekend near York netted seven DUI arrests for local law enforcement, but may also result in some addition criminal charges for one woman who attempted to flee.
According to news accounts, the woman was waiting in line to pass through the checkpoint when she apparently changed her mind and attempted to turn around in a parking lot. Officers attempted to stop her, but she drove off at a high rate of speed. One detective on the scene said he was following her, but she managed to lose him once she reached York.
However, as the detective continued his search he came upon the woman's car, which had crashed not long after losing the police. The woman was unhurt, but had fled the scene leaving her wallet and keys behind. At this time, it's not clear what additional criminal charges the woman might face.
Officers set up the checkpoint in West Manchester Township for about three hours beginning late Saturday night and running into the early hours of Sunday morning. In that time, they managed to cite five individuals for driving under suspension, one for underage drinking, and another for driving without a license. They also made one drug arrest and served three warrants.
Of course, fleeing from the police is never a good idea, but DUI checkpoints present a number of potential problems. If you have been stopped and cited at a checkpoint, just know that there are a number of constitutional issues that come into play. Before you plead guilty or take a plea deal, you may want to speak with someone to make sure the checkpoint was legal and ensure that your legal rights are being protected.
